Sore Throat, Swollen Glands and Cold Hands and Feet Every Winter Solstice? — Doctor Luo Dalun: Kidney Essence Deficiency — Yin Huo Tang (Guide Fire Down Decoction) Pulls the False Fire Down
💬 Note from Doctor Luo: Dear friends, good morning to you all. Today let’s talk about winter solstice wellness. Yesterday was the winter solstice, and I forgot to record a talk for you — so I’m making it up today. According to the ancient astronomical calendar, on the winter solstice the first yang qi begins to grow — yi yang shi sheng. That is why this solar term is so crucial.
The winter solstice is not “winter has arrived” — it’s “winter has come to an end”
Many people think the winter solstice means winter is starting. Doctor Luo says the opposite — the winter solstice is winter reaching its end. From this day on, the days gradually grow longer, yang qi begins to rise, and the qi movement of heaven and earth begins to shift.
💬 Note from Doctor Luo: The winter solstice isn’t winter arriving — it’s winter coming to an end. From here the days slowly start to get longer. At this time yang qi begins to rise — the first yang is born. This is the shift of qi in nature, between heaven and earth — and we human beings are affected by it too.
During this stretch of days, the seedling of the year’s yang qi is breaking through the soil
Here is the key: it’s not just the solstice day itself — it’s this whole period during which you need to protect your yang qi. Because yang qi has just begun to rise, like a seedling that has just broken through the soil — if you injure it now, the yang qi for the whole year will be affected; it will not grow strong.
💬 Note from Doctor Luo: Everyone, pay attention: during this period, protect your yang qi. Because yang qi has begun to rise — if you injure yang qi just as it’s beginning to grow, the yang qi of the whole year will be affected — it simply won’t grow strong. That’s the thing to watch.
So how do we nourish it? Doctor Luo gives two directions: people with yin deficiency or essence deficiency should nourish yin at this time — because yang qi rising needs yin as its foundation.
💬 Note from Doctor Luo: When yang qi rises, it’s like a tree about to grow — underneath it there has to be water, right? So you nourish yin. Yin deficiency, yang deficiency — everything needs attention. This is a window both for protecting yourself and for nourishing.
What is kidney essence? The root of human life
Today Doctor Luo’s focus is people with kidney essence deficiency (shen jing bu zu). He says the concept of kidney essence was explained extremely clearly in the Ming dynasty — how to treat it was clear too; but after the Qing dynasty, people gradually became fuzzy about it, so some illnesses caused by kidney essence deficiency became something later doctors didn’t know how to treat.
What is kidney essence? Doctor Luo breaks it down in detail:
- Prenatal essence (xian tian zhi jing): inherited from your parents — the earliest refined substance of a human life;
- Postnatal essence (hou tian zhi jing): formed continuously after birth as the spleen and stomach absorb the nutrients from food and the clean, fresh qi from the air you breathe.
These two combine and are sealed and stored in the kidneys — this is the root of human life.
💬 Note from Doctor Luo: People with sufficient kidney essence grow and develop normally, have abundant vitality, and ample qi and blood. People with deficient kidney essence develop all kinds of problems. So kidney essence is of vital importance. Kidney essence transforms into kidney qi, and kidney qi in turn transforms into kidney yin and kidney yang — this is the concept of “the Dao gives birth to one, one gives birth to two, two gives birth to three, three gives birth to the myriad things.” Kidney essence is the fundamental substance — it sits between yin and yang and contains both.
Doctor Luo points out one particular blur in Chinese medicine: later generations often lump kidney essence together with kidney yin, assuming kidney yin already includes kidney essence. Actually that’s not right — kidney essence is what gives birth to yin and yang; both kidney yin and kidney yang come out of kidney essence. So kidney essence deserves to be protected properly.
How does kidney essence get drained? Five kinds of consumption
People with kidney essence deficiency are extremely common. Doctor Luo lists the ways essence gets consumed:
- Excessive sex — all kinds of depletion;
- Overwork;
- Obsessive worrying — thinking about problems day and night, draining heart blood;
- Overeating rich food — injuring the spleen and stomach;
- Bad emotions — hurting the liver;
- External pathogens invading — no strength to resist, damaging lung qi; and when the spleen and stomach are weak, there’s no strength to generate lung qi either…
In short, when the essence of the five organs is damaged, kidney essence suffers too.
What does kidney essence deficiency look like? Aging before your time
The most direct manifestation of kidney essence deficiency is — aging.
💬 Note from Doctor Luo: A person with kidney essence deficiency is aging. First, vitality wanes — listless, no strength; hair falls out easily — hair loss, teeth falling out, aging very obvious; skin sags, the complexion turns sallow; everything related to reproduction degrades; people age prematurely. In children, it means failing to develop — delayed development; in middle-aged people, premature aging arrives early — frequent urination at night, getting up to urinate, a serious decline in sexual quality, all the feelings of premature aging appear, entering an elderly state ahead of time. Right now, people with damaged kidney essence are especially numerous.
When kidney essence is insufficient, both kidney yin and kidney yang begin to be insufficient. Depending on each person’s habits, many people develop in the direction of kidney yin deficiency.
Kidney yin deficiency: a dark red tongue and constant “fire”
What does kidney yin deficiency look like? Doctor Luo’s tongue-reading pointer: the tongue is red — dark red, like a persimmon — with a very thin coating.
💬 Note from Doctor Luo: The tongue is a sauce-red, dark-red color. Such people always feel they have false fire (xu huo). Why? Kidney essence is insufficient, kidney yin is insufficient, kidney water is lacking. So the yang qi in the kidneys looks like it’s in surplus — especially around the winter solstice: the first yang is born, every day yang rises — but your water is too little, the pool is too shallow to raise this dragon, so the dragon flies up — the dragon-thunder fire races upward. That’s why the false fire in the upper body becomes so obvious at this time.
Just in these two days, Doctor Luo saw patients with this kind of racing false fire: one with sudden facial paralysis; eyes red and tearful; trigeminal neuralgia; mouth ulcers; headaches; styes — all this kind of situation.
💬 Note from Doctor Luo: When there’s fire above, does it easily invite external pathogens in? Yes. For example, when the throat swells up, external pathogens quickly follow right in — and some people genuinely can’t tell: is this a sore throat caused by an external cold, or is it kidney yin deficiency with false fire racing upward?
Doctor Zhang Jingyue’s case: a head swollen like the “big-head plague” — actually false fire
Doctor Luo tells a classic case — Doctor Zhang Jingyue once treated a patient whose throat was severely swollen and whose head was swollen huge, looking like the “big-head plague” (da tou wen), clearly like an external contraction.
💬 Note from Doctor Luo: And what happened? Doctor Zhang Jingyue led the fire down — and the next day, the patient looked quite clear and handsome. Swollen like that the day before — it was actually internal injury, related to internal causes. People like this also don’t recover easily from external colds — no matter how much you clear heat and toxins, it’s hard to cure — because their kidney essence deficiency is pronounced.
Yin Huo Tang (Guide Fire Down Decoction): prepared rehmannia as the base, leading the fire down
So what to do in this situation? Doctor Luo talks about his often-mentioned Yin Huo Tang — a simple and effective formula.
💬 Note from Doctor Luo: Yin Huo Tang mainly uses prepared rehmannia (shu di) — a large dose of shu di to nourish kidney essence; paired with mai dong to nourish kidney yin; plus a tiny bit of cinnamon bark (rou gui). The original Yin Huo Tang didn’t have cinnamon — Chen Shiduo paired it with ba ji tian. He said ba ji tian leads the fire down even better — add a bit of ba ji tian to warm yang: I nourish kidney essence and kidney yin, and meanwhile your yang qi isn’t really flourishing either — it only looks redundant. So what do I do? I add a little yang-warming herb to lead this fire down. Later, adding cinnamon worked even better. Add a bit of wu wei zi to nourish the essence of all five organs.
Once you use this formula, it mainly nourishes kidney essence, and the fire comes down — sometimes a swollen sore throat is led down in one go. So many friends nowadays have kidney essence deficiency: right around the winter solstice, they show obvious heat symptoms in the upper body.
Heat above, cold below: fire on top, ice underneath
Doctor Luo reminds everyone to remember one classic pattern — heat above with cold below (shang re xia han).
💬 Note from Doctor Luo: Obvious heat symptoms in the upper body, while the lower limbs are ice-cold — touch the ankles, the knees, they’re freezing. This is all a sign of essence deficiency: the upper-heat-lower-cold pattern caused by kidney essence deficiency. Below is cold because the fire has come up; above is hot — especially the head and face with all kinds of fire. For people like this, one or two doses of Yin Huo Tang and the fire is led down.
Daily wellness: put prepared rehmannia and cinnamon in your soup
What should ordinary people with kidney essence deficiency do day to day? Doctor Luo gives the most practical daily method — cooking it into soup.
💬 Note from Doctor Luo: When you simmer soup for everyday wellness, drop in two pieces of prepared rehmannia. For instance, 30 grams of good shu di — nowadays there’s the good nine-times-steamed-nine-times-dried shu di, take a piece and put it in. You definitely want to pair it with a little cinnamon — a piece about the size of one thumb joint. Put that in too. You can also add a little tian dong, mai dong, even ba ji tian — whatever you like. The main thing: 30 grams or more of shu di, one slice of rou gui — these two together, simmered with duck soup, pork soup, or pork spine bone soup, and drink it regularly.
For food therapy, you can also use gou qi zi (wolfberry), huang jing, and shan yu rou (cornus fruit) — things that nourish the essence of the liver and kidneys — as a dietary supplement to help fill the kidney essence, because people with essence deficiency are very numerous.
💬 Note from Doctor Luo: Here’s a reference ratio: shu di 30 g, mai dong 6 g, rou gui 3 g — if you’re yin deficient, add a bit of mai dong, it’s excellent. Shu di replenishes essence, rou gui warms things up slightly, little by little the kidney essence deficiency is made up, and the false fire above is led down. That’s how the body can be truly healthy.
Around the winter solstice, don’t do these things
Around this solar term, Doctor Luo especially reminds us of several things not to do:
- No excessive sex — these days, don’t overindulge in bedroom matters;
- Don’t brave the cold — don’t go out into the cold wind; yang qi is just rising, protect it;
- No raw or cold food — don’t drink iced beer;
- Don’t cool off right after heavy sweating — if you go out, sweat heavily, and then cool off outside while it’s snowing — that’s courting disaster.
💬 Note from Doctor Luo: Don’t injure your yang qi — yang qi is a young seedling; don’t chop it down, don’t pull out its root, like pulling up your own tree’s roots. So protect yang qi: say you want to drink some mutton soup — that’s fine, it lets yang qi grow well. And for those with kidney essence deficiency, everyone should replenish kidney essence — this too is something that needs nourishing.
Tongue diagnosis: three kinds of tongue, three ways to regulate
How do you judge which direction fits you? Doctor Luo teaches reading the tongue:
- Dark red tongue with a very thin coating → kidney essence deficiency, false fire floating upward — use shu di with a little rou gui (the Yin Huo Tang approach);
- Snow-white tongue → don’t use the rehmannia-family herbs; you need to warm and nourish — take Gui Fu Di Huang Wan (the Jingui Shenqi Wan / Kidney Qi Pill), which contains rou gui and fu zi, warming-yang additions — but its core is still nourishing kidney essence;
- Very red tongue → you can take Liu Wei Di Huang Wan to nourish yin.
💬 Note from Doctor Luo: Liu Wei Di Huang Wan nourishes yin; Jingui Shenqi Wan warms and tonifies kidney yang. Their core ingredient is the same — prepared rehmannia. It’s only a matter of which direction you nourish, adjusted to yourself. If ordinary people can’t distinguish yin deficiency from yang deficiency, then just take shu di with a bit of rou gui and simmer it in soup — that’s the way to regulate during these days.
Colds that never clear? Strengthen the upright qi first — Yin Huo Tang is a great formula for reversing the pattern
Finally, Doctor Luo talks about a scenario many people overlook — during a cold, the heat can’t be cleared and the fire won’t come down.
💬 Note from Doctor Luo: Especially with swollen sore throats — in fact, many of these cases end up being caused by kidney essence deficiency. It isn’t that the external pathogen is really that ferocious — it’s your own kidney essence deficiency, plus false fire within, combining with the external pathogen to form the sore throat. So sometimes in the end you may need to strengthen the upright qi (fu zheng) to clear the external pathogen. Among the ways to do it: use shu di with a bit of rou gui — nourishing kidney essence while gently adding yang-warming power — this is an excellent method of fu zheng. Sometimes a few doses of Yin Huo Tang can even reverse the whole pattern of your body — you might recover all at once.
The winter solstice is as important as the New Year: the year’s yang qi begins here
Doctor Luo says the ancients took the winter solstice very seriously — the winter solstice is as important as the New Year (dong zhi da ru nian).
💬 Note from Doctor Luo: Why? Because at this turning point of the seasons, the yang qi of the whole year first rises — it is the beginning of the year, extremely, extremely important. A lot of people have bad throats, chronic pharyngitis and the like — you’ll see, drink some Yin Huo Tang and the fire is led down, and they feel recovered very quickly. People with heat above and cold below — cold knees and legs below, always having fire above — can all use this as a reference. Everyone, remember: dark red tongue with thin coating → shu di with rou gui; snow-white tongue → Gui Fu Di Huang Wan; very red tongue → Liu Wei Di Huang Wan. Around the winter solstice, protect your kidney essence — then the body can be truly healthy. Thank you all for listening. Tomorrow we’ll continue with Chinese medicine topics. See you tomorrow!
